Nathaniel J. Brown
Nathaniel is a filmmaker, photographer, translator and field producer born in Sydney, Australia and raised in the United States. His film practice centers around documentary and is based in East and Central Asia. Nathaniel's most recent documentary short film, City of Hands, portrays young artists living in Jingdezhen, China's porcelain capital, and played at the Cannes Film Festival, the Cleveland Film Festival, the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, and won the award for best documentary short at the North Bay Art and Film Festival.
Nathaniel was a Fulbright Scholar to China in 2013-2014 and an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation fellow in 2012. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Middlebury College and has studied at Tsinghua University in Beijing and National Taiwan University in Taipei, receiving a U.S. State Department Critical Language Enhancement Award and a Taiwanese Ministry of Education Huayu Scholarship. Nathaniel is director of product for Wing on Wo and Co in New York, and was editor for the books, The Port and The Image: Documenting China’s Harbor Cities and 50 Contemporary Photobooks from China 2009-2014
Nathaniel has lived between China and the United States for the past decade, and is currently based wherever his projects bring him.
